It’s really irritating when people forget just who John Watson is.

He was a soldier who fought for his country in Afghanistan. The only reason he’s back in England instead of fighting and winning that war is because he happened to get shot. He’s not weak because of it. He’s damaged, sure, but he’s far from weak. He’s frustrated. He’s frustrated that he lost his exciting, ideal life because of a stupid bullet to the shoulder; one that almost cost him his life. He’s frustrated he has to be ordinary again. It gives him tremors and nightmares to think he will become one of the millions of ordinary civilians who live their contented, ordinary lives. John doesn’t want that. He never wanted that. He wanted to matter; he wanted to prove everyone who ever underestimated him that he could be a hero and he could be something more than just John Watson.

But he failed. Shot through the shoulder, damaged, forced back into his pathetic, ordinary life. He starts to believe everyone was right. He wasn’t special.

Then he meets Sherlock. Finally, back in the action in a way he never knew existed. This secret war to be fought on the streets of London. He can help again. He can serve. He can be a hero, finally. He isn’t worthless anymore. In fact, he’s essential now. He’s the one who calms the great Sherlock Holmes’ tireless mind. He’s his handler, his doctor, his only friend. He matters in a way no one else on Earth could.

Then Sherlock dies. It’s worse than his shoulder wound. Nothing can save him now. He couldn’t even save his best friend; what good is he if he can’t protect the only man who dared to make John Watson feel like he mattered?

Once again he returns to being ordinary. The leg pain returns. The nightmares come back. The tremors in his hand never stop. Because once again he feels ordinary, pathetic, and above all, alone. But this time it’s blanketed by a crushing, suffocating guilt that he could have saved Sherlock’s life; he just didn’t.

And that’s who John Watson is.
